For no reason I knew, she chose my door
that afternoon to knock on. She waited,
90 percent of her weight, those eyes.
Too heavy a gaze to hold, almost.
Still, I said, “Of course you can come in.”
She sat on the hard-backed desk chair
by my bed, instead of next to me,

I imagine boxes of cereal
on store shelves, gathering dust,
their over-excited spokescartoons
struggling to maintain smiles past
their expiration. Devastation looming
on the heels of every shopper,
who stops within an aisle, but
doesn’t stop for them.
No ode to consumerism, this -
just the vision I have of produce
perking up inside its plastic bin,
its triggered senses raising leaves
like tentacles, trying to embody
couldn’t-care-less [...]
